"Psychopedia" and "Walk the Shame" has been played frequently on norwegian radio, and the utterly likeable Pony the Pirate has seen their popularity shoot up like a heroine addict.. or a rocket if that is more politically correct. Their music is full of good vibes and is likely to have you grinning happily within few seconds of audioplay. The Gone-Surfing.com crew are all big fans of Pony The Pirate, and that is why we wanted to link them up as the fourth featured artist.
We also exchanged some words with them regarding their tight relationship to surfing.. here is the full interview:
::: Gone-Surfing.com: Hola Pony the Pirate! You are currently blowing up after winning the norwegian music contest Urørt 2009 with your incredibly catchy tune "Walk the Shame". Could you please tell us a little bit about how the song came to be? And did you ever consider calling the song "Surf the Shame"? ::: Pony The Pirate: In January 2008 Pony the Pirate had gathered their 8 members in a small house in Vennesla, Sørlandet. They were planning to record a few songs for a demo, and among those were Walk the Shame. This song had come to life about half a year earlier under a jamlike rehearsal with some of the pirates. And magically, this song turned out to overtake the whole Urørt-finale! Which we are very pleased and grateful for! Surf the Shame was at that point no opportunity as a title, mainly because we didn't think of it! But if we had: absolutely! We have heard many creative alternatives to the title, but Surf the Shame was quite new for us.
::: Gone-Surfing.com: Hehehe.. Nice.. Whats the surfskill level like in the band? Any Kelly Slaters (best male surfer) or Layne Beachleys (best female surfer) amongst the eight of you? ::: Pony The Pirate: Hehe. I have heard rumours that the guitarist, Ole, once tried a board over in the States. In real water actually... But I am not aware of any more surf experience than that. Many of us have done a lot of snowboarding. Does that count? But I have to say: if you look at us and by our appearances, judge our skills, I think you will get the impression that Kurt(drums) is the Kelly Slater, and Lene(flute, synth) the Layne Beachley!
::: Gone-Surfing.com: Snowboarding is definitely a big star in the credbook. Tell us what the summer has been like for Pony The Pirate? Have you been near the ocean at all? Getting some surf in, or other watersports? ::: Pony The Pirate: Two words about the summer: Driving and Festivals. We have spent a too big amount of the summer in the car driving. On the other hand, we were lucky and got us gigs at a lot of festivals (which we then had to drive to. So in a weird way we are quite glad about the driving as well). Among the festivals were Quarten and Øya; and they are very close to the ocean. Generally we have been a lot to the west coast of Norway, and it is almost impossible not to see the water over there. And at Lost Weekend at Askøy, we got a hike by some kick ass nice boats to get us from backstage to the stage! And that’s pretty much the water sports we have been doing. (Except from maybe hobby swimming while standing in the line for the car ferry, but I don’t reckon that as a sport…)
::: Gone-Surfing.com: What are you currently up to (gigs og album info etc. PROMO)? ::: Pony The Pirate: The summer has been full of festivals, in August we did some club concerts, and the next small tour will be in November, when we release our debut album. Alongside all the festivals we have worked quite hard to finish it, and if everything goes forward as planned, the 2nd of November will be the magic date for Pony the Pirate!
::: Gone-Surfing.com: Good luck with everything, especially with the release of your debut album. We wish you all the best in the times to come, and may the musical waves be with you. Peace, love and happiness! ::: Pony The Pirate:
Thank you! Musical waves are important to us! And we will definitely take up some surfing as times goes by, either on new musical waves or some real ones. Take care and peace back!
