TUE 04.11.2008 - ARTICLE: Southcoast Surfing Championships @ Boscombe Pier 22-23nov.

22-23 november @ Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth, UK

COMPETITION UPDATE PR 14.03.09

As you might have heard by now.. the South coast Surfing Championships scheduled for this weekend has yet again been CANCELLED due to bad surf conditions. The south coast surfing championship doesn't give up that easy though! The competition will now be on a short-notice basis, so that it is easier to predict the upcoming surf conditions. So stay tuned, because it's going down, one way or another!

COMPETITION UPDATE PR 11.03.09

New dates for the South coast surfing championships at Boscombe Pier has been set, the competition will take place the firstcoming weekend 14-15.march. However, looking at the forecast on MSW for the upcoming weekend, it looks like Boscombe Pier will have some difficulty fulfilling the competition criteria of minimum 3ft waves. Let's just hope the mighty Poseidon has something special planned for the weekend. Hate to sound pessimistic, but unfortunately it looks like the south coast surfing championships will be postponed yet again.

INTRODUCTION
This year the annual South coast surfing championships will be held at Boscombe Pier, the event will take place on the weekend of 22-23rd November 2008. However, this is wave-dependant. Paul Clarke, one of the arrangers of this fantastic event, stated in an email to Gone Surfing that they wanted at least 3ft waves to go through with the competition. If the wave criteria isn't met the event will be postponed to the next weekend, 29-30th November 2008.

VENUE
One of the likely reasons that they chose Boscombe Pier as the venue of this event (remember this is WILD speculation from Gone Surfing's editor), is to get increased awareness and some great media coverage of the artificial surf reef which is currenly being built at Boscombe Pier. However, Boscombe Pier does not get the most swell, but we're still keeping our fingers and toes crossed for some good surfing conditions on the day of the event.

COMPETITION ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- For clarification: The length of a shortboard is (according to the competition rules) up to 9ft. A longboard is any board longer than 9ft.
- 8 different categories: (1) Shortboard U18 (2) Shortboard 18-35yrs (3) Longboard U18 (4) Longboard 18-35yrs (5) Bodyboard U18 (6) Bodyboard 18-35yrs (7) Woman's Open Event (8) Veterans (above 35yrs of age)
- Date: Saturday 22nd- and Sunday 23rd of November.
- Time: The first heat on the 22nd starts at 8am
- Contestants: Approx 100-200
- Expected sea temp: Approx 10 degrees
- Expected air temp: Approx 4 - 10 degrees celsius
- Wave forecast: Crossing our fingers for some swelly swell

THE EVENT'S WEBSITE
"Bournemouth's surfing community is gearing up to welcome surfers from across the region to the annual South Coast Surfing Championship. The South Coast Championships were started by the Isle of Wight Surf Club in the late 1960's. Since then it has become an annual event rotating between three surf clubs: Wessex, based in Bournemouth, Shore in East Wittering and the Isle of Wight." - Read the full article here: http://www.a1surf.com/southcoastchampionships.html

EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE( pr 04.11.08 ):

Mail sent - 03.11.08

Hi Paul!

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to you and the other arrangers of Southcoast Surfing Championships at Boscombe Pier. My surfingfriends and me are really looking forward to it! Secondly, I want to ask you some questions regarding the competition:

(1) What are the 8 categories?
I can only count 6 categories, Longboard U18 and above 18, shortboard U18 and above 18 & bodyboard U18 and above 18. What are the additional 2 categories?

(2) How good to you have to be to enter the competition?
I started surfing in 2005 in Australia, and consider myself as an intermediate surfer. Do you think this would be adequate?

(3) What are the length limits in the shortboard and longboard categories?
I surf a Maurice Cole 6'2", a Wayne Parkes 6'8 and a Dave Berntsen Custom 7'6".

Keep up the good work Paul! Looking forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Alexander

Answer - 04.11.08

Hi Alexander,
The other 2 categories will become apparent when all the entries are in:
Basically we will run a womens open event and veterans (over 35 yrs).
The competion will be friendly, so everyone is welcome to enter - however, we will not run the event unless the surf conditions are challenging: head high or above, so bear this in mind when entering.
Longboards must be over 9 feet, so all your boards fit in the shortboard category.
I've attached an entry form
Look forward to hearing from you.
All the best
Paul
